The market is a bustle of activity. Shoppers are haggling over goods, while merchants call out their wares to the crowd. There are bags of flour for sale, and bolts of cloth, and boxes of speckled eggs. A smell of roasting chestnuts drifts from a nearby costermonger’s cart.

''Pounds, Shillings and Pence''
<br>
Money in the UK used to look very different. Before the decimal system was introduced in 1971 we used to use a different form of currency—pounds, shillings and pence.
<br>
The letters //l, s, and d// were used to represent different coins, in the same way that the £ symbol and the letter p are for coins today. The letters l, s, and d were used because of words that the Romans used for their currency.
<br>
(text-style:"underline")[Pence]
* There were 12 pence to a shilling
* Pence could be divided down into halfpennies (½ d) or farthings (¼ d)
* Pence were represented by the letter ‘d’, after the roman word ‘denarius’
(text-style:"underline")[Shillings]
* There were 20 shillings to a pound
* 1 shilling was known as a ‘bob’, 2 shillings as a ‘florin’, and 5 shillings as a ‘crown’
* Shillings were represented by the letter ‘s’, after the roman word ‘solidus’
(text-style:"underline")[Pounds]
* Pounds were represented by the letter ‘l’, after the roman word ‘libre’

''Sheffield, 1889''<br>
<br>
You are a servant working for a rich family in Broomhall, Sheffield. The housekeeper has sent you to the market with a shopping list and ''one pound'' to buy the groceries.
<br>
She wants you to buy ''meat'', ''bread'', ''fruit'' and something to ''drink'' for a dinner party the family is hosting tonight.
<br>
A pound is a lot of money — and you'd like to take your family on a trip to the seaside on your next day off. If you can spend a little less at the market, maybe you can keep the change for yourself. ''Six shillings'' would be enough to cover the day out.
<br>
Be careful, though — if you only buy poor-quality groceries the housekeeper will have your hide!
<br>
Can you ''keep six shillings in your pocket without getting caught''?
